Project Overview
Title: Pittsburgh Penguins App Draft Hub
Role: Lead Designer using YinzCam’s proprietary systems
Goal: Create a central hub where Penguins fans could access all draft-related content, incorporating new app features we hadn’t used before.
Process
Research: Leveraged YinzCam’s “sandbox” to explore similar projects from other sports teams and identify available features within the app.
Design & Prototyping: Sketched the layout and determined the key information to display. Modeled the structure after a football team’s page, but customized it to fit the Penguins’ brand and fan needs.
Testing: Worked closely with YinzCam and my team to ensure everything functioned and displayed properly using the app’s preview mode.
Outcome
Reflection: This was my first solo project, and I was proud of the outcome. I enjoyed collaborating with our graphic designer to bring our visions to life. The page was well-received, with many compliments, and the Penguins have reused my design for future drafts.
Solution: We became the first NHL team to create a dedicated draft hub in the app. YinzCam highlighted our work in their weekly newsletter, and we successfully utilized new app features.
Challenges: We had to adapt in real-time as unexpected changes occurred during the live draft, such as trading picks, requiring flexibility and quick adjustments.
